Ken Roczen's 2026 championship campaign has been one of the sport's defining storylines โ a rider who has come close so many times, now holding the points lead with two rounds remaining. Behind every lap of that campaign is a mechanic who understands exactly what the RM-Z450 needs to perform at championship level, week after week, on every type of supercross track the calendar throws at it.
The HEP Suzuki program, run by Dustin Pipes, is a tight-knit operation. Roczen serves as Global Brand Ambassador for Suzuki and has built a personal relationship with the team over four seasons. The stability of that environment โ same team, same people, same processes โ is part of what has allowed Roczen to raise his performance in the second half of this season.
The Championship Machine
Building a Suzuki RM-Z450 for championship supercross requires a level of attention that most fans never see. The engine has to be tuned to Roczen's specific power preferences โ he's an experienced rider who knows exactly what he wants in the mid-range, the top end, and the map transitions. The suspension has to handle the aggressive lines he takes, the rhythm sections he carries more speed through than most riders, the whoops that punish bad setups mercilessly.
The mechanic on Roczen's bike is responsible for all of that, and for making sure that nothing โ not a loose bolt, not a fraying cable, not a suspension seal that's seen too many laps โ shows up on race night. Four wins this season. The red plate after Philadelphia. Two rounds left. That's not luck. That's preparation, executed week after week by the people in the KR94 pit.
The red plate didn't just happen. It was built, one prepared machine at a time.
